Library at a Glance
The Guindy Campus is the Science Campus of the University of Madras comprising of the Schools of Physical, Chemical, Life, Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences. The Guindy Campus Library has emerged as a Knowledge Resource Centre mainly catering to the information needs of the Faculty, Research Scholars and Students of these Schools of Sciences, besides being an information hub to industries and research institutions globally.
The Library had its origin at the main building of the Alagappa Chettiar College of Technology, Guindy (popularly known as A.C.Tech.) in 1947. Later, it was shifted to the present independent building in the campus with a floor area of nearly 30,000 sq.ft. in 1972.
Library users have always cherished memories of availing the services of this treasure-house of documents since the past few decades. A rare collection of Science journals present here in foreign languages like German, Russian dating 150 to 200 years back is much sought after by corporate organizations for their research work.
Automation of the Library consisting of over a lakh documents was made possible by the initial financial support of the "Science City", Government of Tamilnadu. The Library is in the process of modernization, with the establishment of an Online Information Zone, a Multimedia Lecture Hall and a Video Conferencing Suite funded by the UGC, under the "University with Potential for Excellence" scheme.
